The Beautiful of Merak Temple

The Beautiful of Merak Temple - Location: Candi Merak Vilage, on.Klaten district

The peacock temple was discovered around 1925. The giving of this name may have been the location of this temple where there was a peacock's nest. According to previous history, the land was only empty land where there was a large tree which at that time was called the Joho Tree. This peacock temple was buried and only a few stones and statues were visible scattered about. The peacock temple is a relic of Hindhu from the Ancient Mataram Kingdom and is estimated to be the same era as Karangnongko Temple which is not far from this temple.

This temple consists of a main temple and 3 ancillary temples. At that time the main temple had been restored to the body of the temple, while the top to the roof of the temple was still in the temporary reconstruction site. Meanwhile, the 3 ancillary temples have not been restored and are still in ruins. In the room of the main temple there is a yoni and a Ganesha statue and a statue of Durga in the niche of the temple. There are makara decorations on the ascending stairs and reliefs on the cheeks of the temple. Around the temple are scattered stones of the temple, part of the main temple that has not been installed and statues scattered around the ruins of the ancillary temple.

In 2010 the main building of the Merak Temple began to be restored and in 2011 the Merak Temple was completely restored and inaugurated.
